We took Jack to Puppy Kindergarten when he was six months old. He learned your basic stuff. Stay, sit, down. But any instructor will tell you, that most of the learning is completed at home…outside the classroom…through constant reinforcement. After Jack got his doggy degree, we also taught him paw. What always eluded us, however, was that ever so cute command…roll over. We started slowly…very slowly. Jack is three now…We noticed that when he became turbo Jack, we could quite him down with a gentle…shhhhh. When he hears this command he rolls on to his belly….to have it rubbed…not to go the full three sixty. So we eventually started egging him on with a treat to roll all the way. Let us not kid you, this did not happen over night….but now that hes got it…its so much fun!!

This is a short video Val and I took when Jack was about 15 weeks old. It’s amazing to think he was that small and also that dark in color. At about 6 months old his coat really started to get lighter, but thank fully the cuteness stayed. When I picked him out I had no idea what he would look like as he aged. I wasn’t too big on the bichon look and the white fur, but combining that with a yorkie coloring and snout ended up being quite the compliment.

Here’s the short video I promised…

The Yorkie Bichon mix of dog, also called the Yochon, are generally an active breed. Not too active though. You are probably asking, “what exactly does active breed mean?” Yorkie Bichons are a small dog, between 7 to 15 pounds… so they won’t need long walks several times a day. A few 30 minute play sessions throughout the day will do just fine. A great way to tire out little Jack Magoo is to let him have a towel and just chase him around the house. Heck, it’s good exercise for you as well. Lets see… some of Jacks favorite games are…

Keep away, where he keeps his toys away from you

wrestling. He loves to play rough.

tug-a-war. Get a nice rope toy or a towel and he’ll pull for hours

Chewing on his toys

running around the house, squeaking his toys

Going for Walks! <- Jack’s Favorite

Yochons love to go for walks. Just mention the word “walk” and they will be at the door giving you that cute smile. Their short legs mean you won’t have to walk them far, but get ‘em in grass and it’s a blast! Watching Jack jump up and down, hopping through the grass…you can tell he just loves it! If there is a choice between walking on the sidewalk or grass, the choice is always grass.

One of my wife and mine favorite places to take Jack is to a local baseball field that is enclosed by a fence. We take Jack off the leash and just let him run around. He usually doesn’t stray too far, but it’s fun to get on opposite sides of the field and have him run back and forth between us.

For those wondering, here is a typical day of exercise that we know makes Jack a happy and tired pup at the end of the day.

Morning: Take him out for a short walk (about 10 minutes) . Main purpose is to go to the bathroom, but we extend that a bit.

Noon: Play about 20 minutes of fetch with him inside. You can really get him going if you want to chase him, but most times I’ll just throw the ball and wrestle around with him for a bit

4pm: Chase him around the house after he grabs one of my wife’s shirts. If you don’t chase him, he’ll drop it and get something else he isn’t suppose to have. I really should train him better, but it’s kinda fun

6pm: Take him for about a 30 minute walk if it’s warm outside. If it’s not I’ll play with him for about 30 minutes inside.

He is usually good for the night, except for one RUUUSSHHHHH of energy when my wife comes home from work at midnight. You should see how fast he can tear around the house.

We know we did a good job of exercising him if he is in bed before we are and dives under the covers, out for the night!

My wife, Valarie, and I love our dog, Jack. He arrived two years ago from a Minnesota breeder called MixedBreedPups.com. I bought him as a Christmas present for my wife and I can remember the day we brought him home from the airport. He was so tiny and scared, but soon was jumping, running and barking.

Jack’s mother was a Yorkshire Terrier named Gayle and his father was a Bichon Frise. As far as I know there were 3 other siblings, 2 males and 1 female who we’d love to reunite Jack with.

If you are unfamiliar with this dog breed mix, they are sometimes referred to as Yo-Chons or Yorkie-Chons. Yorki-Chons are a great alternative for families looking for a Yorki-Poo. Most Yorkie-Poos mature a bit smaller than is safe for the youngest children…so Yorkie Bichons fit in very well with those families. Yorki-Chons are sturdy, fun loving dogs, typically about medium in activity level.

Yorkie-Bichons are non-shedding, a great choice for families with allergies. While no dog is completely hypo-allergenic, these come close. Professional grooming should be planned at 6 to 12 week intervals, depending on the allergy situation in the home, and the style of cut your prefer. Long trims will require more frequent grooms.

Jack just turned 2 years old on October 30th and we couldn’t be happier with him. This site is dedicated to him. We will be posting stories, pictures and anything else related to Yorkie Bichon mix breeds to help spread the word about this wonderful mix breed pup.
