Yorkie Bichon Mix: Do they require a lot of exercise?

admin | December 14th, 2009

The Yorkie Bichon mix of dog, also called the Yochon, are generally an active breed.  Not to active though.  You are probably asking, “what exactly does active breed mean?”  Yorkie Bichons are a small dog, between 7 to 15 pounds so they won’t need long walks several times a day, but rather a few 30 minute play sessions throughout the day will do just fine.  Little Jack loves to play “catch me.”  A great way to tire him out is let him have a towel and just chase him around the house, heck it’s good exercise for you as well.  Let see, some of Jacks favorite games are…

  1. Keep away, where he keeps his toys away from you
  2. wrestling.  He loves to play rough.
  3. tug-a-war.  Get a nice rope toy or a towel and he’ll pull for hours
  4. Chewing on his toys
  5. running around the house, squeaking his toys
  6. Going for Walks!  <- Jack’s Favorite

Yochon’s love to go for walks, just mention the word “walk” and they will be at the door giving you that cute smile.  Their short legs mean you won’t have to walk them far, but get’m in grass and it’s a blast!  Watching Jack jump up and down, hopping through the grass, you can tell he just loves it!  If there is a choice between walking on the sidewalk or grass, the choice is always grass.

One of my Wife and mine favorite places to take Jack is to a local baseball field that is enclosed by a fence.  We take Jack off the leash and just let him run around.  He usually doesn’t stray to far, but it’s fun to get on opposite sides of the field and have him run back and forth between us.

For those wondering, here is a typical day of exercise that we know makes Jack a happy and tired pup at the end of the day.

Morning: Take him out for a short walk (about 10 minutes) .  Main purpose is to go to the bathroom, but we extend that a bit.

Noon: Play about 20 minutes of fetch with him inside.  You can really get him going if you want to chase him, but most times I’ll just throw the ball and wrestle around with him for a bit

4pm: Chase him around the house after he grabs one of my wife’s shirts.  If you don’t chase him, he’ll drop it and get something else he isn’t suppose to have.  I really should train him better, but it’s kinda fun

6pm: Take him for about a 30 minute walk if it’s warm outside.  If it’s not I’ll play with him for about 30 minutes inside.

He is usually good for the night, except for one RUUUSSHHHHH of energy when my wife comes home from work at midnight.  You should see how fast he can tear around the house.

We know we did a good job of exercising him if he is in bed before we are and dives under the covers, out for the night!

Jack and the Red Football

admin | December 6th, 2009

This is one of the first videos we took of Jack.  I’m not sure if all Yorkie Bichon mixes are as curious or cautious as our dog, but it’s funny none the less.   He approached many of his other toys the same way in the early days. Now he isnt so afraid of them and runs around with them in his mouth, while pushing them to the ground to make them squeak.

Funny Pictures of Our Yorkie Bichon Mix

admin | December 1st, 2009

Like all dogs, Jack has a mind of his own and it’s one funny mind at that!  I wish we were constantly taking pictures of Jack because we miss great photo opportunities.  Imagine a picture of him trying to jump onto our bed and not quite making it or him tumbling feet over head trying to stop when he saw something interesting.  He is a very curious and energetic dog at times and at other times he is so docile we like to call him our “Pose-able Puppy”, we can literally put him in any position we want and he’ll stay.   For those that want to know what kind of demeanor a Yorkie Bichon puppy dog has, it’s a kind, friendly dog who loves to be chased around the kitchen table but at the same time beat you to the couch in order to sit on your lap.  They are very smart dogs as well and can quickly get a treat out of a kong toy by throwing it up in the air and letting it hit the ground.  Jack amazes us at times.

Hope you enjoy these funny pictures of some of the crazy things our doggy does.

Our Yorkie Bichon Sleeping

admin | November 22nd, 2009

Sometimes we forget Jack is a dog, because he acts so much like a cat.  Or should we say he sleeps so much like a cat. We put a blanket on the desk because he likes to sleep up there when we are at the computer. He likes to lie on the window sill and look out the window, or curl up into a little ball and go to sleep.   He also likes to sleep on the the back part of the couch on the cushions, or on your lap if you are also on the couch. Or sometimes we will find him on the floor by the door sleeping in direct line of the sun. Not sure if all yorkie bichons have sleeping habits that are more like that of a cat, but Jack certainly seems to.  Our dog the cat. He is the cutest thing.

Jack and his Toys

admin | November 20th, 2009

Jack loves his squeaky toys.  He’ll run around the house holding his favorite red football in his mouth and every few steps press it against the floor just to squeak it, all while running at full speed.   The reason why the red football is his favorite, is that he has destroyed every other toy we have given him.  His record his 10 seconds, from the time we took it out of the package.  The toy package said it was for strong chewers…HA!!

The gallery below is sort of a “Toys of the Past” montage

These pictures of our Yorkie Bichon mix, Jack, where all taken the first 2 weeks we had him.  The picture of Jack in the crate and eating are his first moments inside our home on the night I brought him home from the air port.  He would eat any hard food, so I tried soft food with no success and then some watered down soft food still with no luck.  Finally we had to feed him with a food syringe.   I think he was just nervous and in shock from a long day.  My wife and I live in New Jersey and Jack flew in from Minnesota, arriving around 6pm.  He was so cute!

Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Welcome to My Yorkie Bichon

admin | November 13th, 2009

Jack - PuppyMy wife, Valarie and I love our dog Jack.  He arrived two years ago from a Minnesota breeder called MixedBreedPups.com. I bought him as a Christmas present for my wife and I can remember the day we brought him home from the airport.  He was so tiny and scared, but soon was jumping, running and barking.

Jack’s mother was a Yorkshire Terrier named Gayle and his father was a Bichon Frise.  As far as I know there were 3 other siblings, 2 males and 1 female who we’d love to reunite Jack with.

If you are unfamiliar with this dog breed mix, they are sometimes referred to as Yo-Chons or Yorkie-Chons.  Yorki-Chons are a great alternative for families looking for a Yorki-Poo. Most Yorkie-Poos mature a bit gaylesmaller than is safe for the youngest children, so these fit in very well with those families. Yorki-Chons are sturdy, fun loving dogs, typically about medium in activity level.

Yorkie-Bichons are non-shedding, a great choice for families with allergies. While no dog is completely hypo-allergenic, these come close. Professional grooming should be planned at 6 to 12 week intervals, depending on the allergy situation in the home, and the style of cut your prefer. Long trims will require more frequent grooms.

Jack is just turned 2 years old on October 30th and we couldn’t be happier with him.  This site is dedicated to him and we will be posting stories, pictures and anything else related to Yorkie Bichon mix breeds to help spread the word about this wonderful mix breed pup.
