What is a Reverse Sneeze?
Over the two years we’ve had Jack, he will occasionally start having these episodes where it sounds like he is having trouble breathing. His body gets stiff, back arches and he makes this weird sound. After doing a little pocking around on the internet it turns out that some dogs have this reflex called Reverse Sneezing. It isn’t bread specific and at least in Jack doesn’t happen to often. I’d say that he’ll probably have an episode once ever few months, but it’ll happen a few times over an hour or so.
Jack will stop after a few minutes, but to help your dog stop reverse sneezing a little quicker you have to get them to swallow. An easy trick for doing this is to cover their nose and that’ll make your pup swallow. I’ve tested this out on our borkie and it works very well. He will swallow and the reverse sneezing will usually come to an end. I don’t believe there is a cure for it, but we are going to show the video to our vet when Jack goes in for his yearly checkup next month.

Hello, I have a 10 month old yorkie bichon mix that is very stubborn! He knows when he does something wrong and I just am not sure what to do? Any suggestions on breaking them of certain habits and just raising him in general?

We are still trying to break Jack of some habits. Every night after dinner if we don’t push the chairs in he jumps right up on the table when nobody is looking. He is smart, and waits for everyone to turn their heads. My wife and I have had the best luck with just being persistent, consistent and to make sure we reward him when he does good. If he is acting bad, we don’t really yell at him, we just give him an AH AH sound and he usually stops.
Does your dog love playing keep away? Jack loves to be chased when he has something.
He loves playing keep away. He now knows when I leave for work he will hide behind the chairs where I cannot get him and I have to drag him out. I hate doing it, but I don’t know what else to do. I have tried treats and he knows better. He will hide when he knows that I am leaving or that he is getting a bath. He consistently is messing in his cage. Poo and pee, morning and day. I don’t know what to do. I try taking him out late at night and early in the morning and again before I leave for work. He is the most poo anxiety dog I have ever seen. He will start to squat and if he hears the slightest noise he will run back to me and squeeze his butt in to not have to poo anymore. I try playing with him right before so maybe if he is active it will push out of him, but it just doesn’t seem to work. I have tried 3 different size cages, it just doesn’t matter. They have a mind of their own. He’s the cutest thing when he is tired and when he plays, but I just don’t know what to do about the cage and potting.
Jack would go to the bathroom in his crate when he as younger as well. Eventually we gave up on the crate and let him stay out. Funny enough we found that he would hold it longer if he slept on the couch or in our bed. He took 6 months + to train and if it’s windy outside or there is a lot of snow he will refuse to go and do exactly what your pup does. God for bid anything moves he’ll pucker up and hold it. For the first 3 months we would take him out about 8 times a day, almost every 2 hours. This worked for us because my wife and I work opposite hours. Now we take him out 4 times, he doesn’t always go but we stick to a routine that works for us and Jack.

thanks. I have tried having him sleep with me but then he wants to wake me up 5times in the middle of the night and either play or go outside and play and run. He also loves going in our front room to pee. He will be outside for 45mins and as soon as I let him in he will run straight in there. I hate getting frustrated and mad at him cause then he just looks at me like i’m sorry. Time of the essence I guess. lol Thank you for everything.

I definitely understand the frustration that comes along with training a yorkie bichon! I thought Jack would never fully be trained. We got him at the same time our neighbors got a puppy and it didnt help to hear that their dog had only gone to the bathroom twice in the house during the entire training process. Jack would sometimes go twice in one day! It seemed like we were taking him out every hour. And it didnt seem like that would ever change. He also went to the bathroom in his crate pretty much every day, even if he had only been in there a few hours. And he never stopped barking when he was in the crate!! Every one else said their dog would whimper when he was first put into the crate, but eventually stop. They suggested putting a blanket over the top of the crate. That didnt help. Eventually, we moved the crate from the kitchen into the bedroom, right next to the bed. We actually put the crate on a bench so it would be eye level with the bed. That seemed to help a little bit. Over time I would start to take him out of the crate at six am and put him in the bed. Then I moved it up to four am, two am, and so on, until he was sleeping in the bed with us the entire night. Sort of weaning him off the crate. It probably was over the course of three or four months though. It definitely didnt happen over night. This seemed to work for us and Jack. I know what you mean though about him jumping off the bed constantly and wanting to play. He used to get up every morning when my husband got up for work, but over time he started to barely notice Scott had gotten up. I know its a slow process. Believe me, I felt like a new mother at the beginning. It really is like having a child. I really do believe that it all comes down to having a schedule that your pup can rely on. He knows Scott gets up every morning now, so he doesnt have to jump off the bed with him. He knows when we are going to take him out, which probably helps with him going in the house. People would also tell us that eventually your dog will indicate that he has to go out by sitting by the door, or some other sign. Jacks signs are not so obvious. He has never sat by the door. Mostly he just stares at you, but sometimes you cant tell if that is because he wants to play, or because he has to go out. I would say he is fully house trained now, but even now, like my husband said, if its cold or windy, he runs out really quick to pee and ends up pooping in the house. And as you said, if he gets distracted by the slightest thing outside, he wont go. Sometimes I walk back inside and then go right back out again, and then he goes. It frustrating, but like I said, coming from someone who swore her dog would never be fully trained, it gets better, you just have to give it time

Thank you for everything. I get frustrated, but I hate the thought of having to give him up so I am trying every resort to find information and see what we can do. He has gotten better. We have gone 3nights without messing in the crate, however I now don’t put him in there until 11:30pm and I have to wake up at 5:30 because it seems he can’t hold it until 6. He still pee’s in it no matter what though. But one step at a time. I know he is confused because he see’s my parents dog (spoiled rotten) getting to do certain things that I do not want him to start doing so he will sit there and pout at me and then look at him. I just have to stay consistent and I think it is working however he has noticed that he has a loud bark and any sudden movement of ANYTHING he will go crazy. Especially if there is another dog or person outside. He never use to act like that so that is our next step. Thank you for all of your advise and helpful information! His name is Teddy. I got him in July and I will admit I did somewhat spoil him in the beginning due to he was a gift for me breaking things off with my ex fiance. lol So it some ways it is my fault, but we will get there. He will be 1 in April. He and Jack look a lot alike however Jack still has his tail and they docked Teddy’s. I will definetly send some pictures. By the way, when he sleeps does he like to lay on top of things? ex. shoes, clothes…anything! lol He always has to prop his head up on something and he now sticks his head inside my shoe and goes to sleep. Thanks for posting the pictures! Teddy is so cute!! And yes, Jack always has his head propped up on something lol. Never a shoe though!
That picture is sooo cute! Im glad to hear you are making some progress with him going in his crate. And dont worry too much about having spoiled him at the beginning, Jack is totally spoiled too. He pretty much has the run of the house. Sometimes I come into the dining room and he is laying on the table!! He is so much like a cat sometimes.
